Lynyrd Skynyrd Concerts

Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American Rock Band that was formed in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida. The Southern Rock band original members were teenage friends Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and Gary Rossington who formed ‘The Noble Five’ original band in 1964. They were joined by Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns in 1965 changing the band name to ‘My Backyard’. They then adopted the name of their Robert E. Lee High School physical teacher, Leonard Skinner who was opposed to boys having long hair as a school policy.

He was later to introduce the band at a concert in Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum. They changed their name to Lynyrd Skynyrd and recorded their first album which was released in 1973 when they rose to prominence receiving national airplay in the Southern portion of USA and went on to achieve worldwide recognition.

Peak Performance

The band was discovered by musician, songwriter and producer Al Krooper who signed them to his Sounds of the South label producing their first album which was distributed and supported by MCA Records. They released their first album featuring their hit song ‘Free Bird’ in 1973. In 1974 they released ‘Second Helping’ featuring their most popular single ’Sweet Home Alabama’ performing at The Ozark Music Festival in Missouri. Lynyrd Skynyrd Rock band became so popular due to its successful concerts and tours reaching their peak performance between 1973-1977.

Plane Crash to – date

In 1977 they released their popular album ‘Street Survivors’ three days before they had a plane crash. Three original band members along with one crew member died on the plane crash. The other members were hospitalized and the band was disbanded. In 1987 the crash survivors reunited and went on a reunion tour as a tribute to the original members releasing their double-live album ‘Southern By The Grace Of God’. Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny Van Zant took over as the new lead singer and primary songwriter continuing with their popular concerts and tours.

In 1994 artists united to release a country Music tribute to those who had perished. Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame on March 13th 2006 and has continued to record and tour performing concerts worldwide. In 2010 a country tribute album was released –The Country Music Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd’ and the old magic in their music lives on. They fill every minute with wonder as the audience sing along with them. Most of their Titles have won Certifications over the years and the following is awesome.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is set on to tours consisting of 30 concerts in US and Canada to support their 12th studio album ‘God & Guns’. The current band members are Johnny Van Zant who is the lead vocalist and the younger brother of Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington who is the guitarist and the only original member in the group, Mark Matejka the guitarist and backing vocalist, Michael Cartellone the drumist, Rickey Medrlocke drumist, guitarist and backing vocalist, Robert Keams bassist and backing vocalist and Peter Keys on the keyboards.
