Freebird – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Freebird has been the finale for Lynyrd Skynyrd’s shows for just about as long as the band has been touring. And it is still a staple of classic rock radio.
Originally released in 1973 on Skynyrd’s first album ‘Pronounced…’, It has been included on several subsequent releases. Those included live albums and a previously unreleased early version without the faded ending on the Greatest Hits compilation, ‘Skynyrd’s Innyrds’.
The surviving band members played together again with Charlie Daniels at his 1979 Volunteer Jam V. When it came time to play Freebird, a lone spotlit microphone stood at the center of the stage while the band played an instrumental version in memory of Ronnie Van Zant and the other members lost in the plane crash. This became somewhat of a tradition until Gary Rossington convinced Johnny Van Zant to begin singing the song during their shows.
The live version of Freebird became popular when Skynyrd’s ‘One More From The Road’ was released in 1976. Clocking in at 14 minutes or more during the bands live performances, it makes obvious the answer to Ronnie’s now unforgettable question: “What song is it you wanna hear?”

Free Bird Lyrics
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
‘Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see
But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn’t be the same
‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird, you’ll can not change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows, I can’t change
Bye, bye, baby it’s been a sweet love
Though this feeling I can’t change
But please don’t take it so badly
‘Cause the Lord knows I’m to blame
But, if I stayed here with you girl
Things just couldn’t be the same
‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird, you’ll can not change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And this bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows, I can’t change
Lord help me, I can’t change
